MAKINO HIGH TORQUE SPINDLE

MAKINO HIGH-TORQUE SPINDLE
High-torque, high-thrust integral drive spindle now available on three HMCs

MASON, OH--January 2006--Makino’s unique, high-torque and high-thrust spindle is now available on three different horizontal machining centers to provide unparalleled productivity and reliability that helps customers reduce costs from their manufacturing operations. The most powerful integral drive spindle on any machine in the world, it has been expanded from its initial offering on the Makino a81, which was renamed the Makino a81M. It is now also available on the company’s A99E and A100 E horizontal machining centers.

The Makino integral drive spindle greatly outperforms all other spindles on the market due to the nature of its special design, which provides significantly higher torque at a low rpm. The proprietary design of the integral drive spindle combines the optimum blend of speed and superior rigidity necessary to take aggressive cuts.

Other high torque spindles utilize a geared-type head. Such design intrinsically causes a loss of significant power that further drops spindle efficiency, which can slow down the spindle performance and adversely affect cycle times.

Visit Booth # 8301 in Hall A of the South Building during the 2006 International Manufacturing Technology Show (IMTS) at McCormick Place in Chicago, Illinois, September 6 through 13 to learn more about this and other technological innovations.

a81M Features
The Makino a81M has a rapid feed rate of IPM 1.42 IPM (36m/min).  It is able to handle workloads of up to 10, 800 pounds (4,900Kg).

The high-torque, integral drive spindle has an available 744 foot pounds (1,009 Nm) of torque from zero to 392 rpm.  To match that torque, the spindle employs 50 hp from 2,000 to 5,000 rpm. This duty rating and continuous output of the Makino spindle lends itself to difficult cutting scenarios.

Long reach and large diameter boring operations require a great deal of torque, particularly at low rpm. For applications such as tapping, where a significant amount of spindle stopping, starting and reversal occurs, the Makino high-torque spindle is significantly faster and has less idle time.

With four rows of angular center trough hinge conveyor bearings in the front and two rows in the back, the a81M has a cartridge-style spindle with jacket cooling and oil/air lubrication.  This helps provide enhanced performance and serviceability, and lower maintenance labor costs.

Application and Markets
The a81 is well suited in large diameter rough boring and face milling on tough and hard metals.  These include tool steel, carbon steel, stainless steel, titanium,  titanium alloy, nickel-based alloys, inconel, cast or ductile iron and CGI (compacted graphite iron).

The a81 has significant application in general machining, production machining, aerospace, diesel engine, construction equipment, and pump and compressor manufacturing. The Makino high-torque, integral drive spindle employs a standard CAT 50-taper toolholder, with an HSK-A100 as optional.  Diameters range up to 4.75 inches (120 mm).

The integral drive, high-torque spindle has no corresponding loss of acceleration and deceleration. The acc/dec ranges from 4.4 seconds to 3.8 seconds at 8,000 rpm, ranging up to 10,000 RP
